Thousands of Jets fans turned Times Square into a sea of green and white Thursday with a pep rally to put their heroes in a fightin’ mood for their championship game with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg even unofficially renamed Manhattan Island “Revis Island” (after the Jets star CB Darrelle Revis), while Gang Green’s gang chanted “J-E-T-S” and waved team-colored towels. Let’s hope the team is as fired up as the fans – being the 8 point underdog for tonight, the Jets’ journey to Superbowl XLIV won’t be an easy ride….

Wembley ParkStation looking to Wembley StadiumAfter a record-breaking crowd saw the New England Patriots beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 last October, London will play host to another NFL International Series regular-season game this autumn.

The NFL has confirmed that the San Francisco 49ers will host the Denver Broncos in this year’s not-to-be missed clash. The game will be played at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 31 October with kick-off set for 5pm UK time (1pm Eastern Time).

The 49ers and Broncos are among the most successful franchises in NFL history, with a combined seven Super Bowl victories between them.

“For the past three years we have seen the extraordinary passion that exists for NFL football in the UK,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “We want to continue to build on that passion by strengthening our ties to our existing UK fans and creating new ones.”

The NFL is also exploring the possibility of playing a second game in the UK in 2010.

The San Francisco 49ers are five-time NFL champions, while the Denver Broncos have won two Super Bowls and appeared in the “biggest show on earth” on four other occasions. The two teams met in Super Bowl XXIV, which the 49ers won 55-10.

If you are in any way concerned about climate change, happen to be a member of Greenpeace, or a fan of small hybrid cars, then we strongly suggest you don’t read on. Bengals’ wideout Chad Ochocinco bought himself a new car for his birthday, but it’s not just any car. He calls it his super-truck and super it is indeed – super big, super customised, and super thirsty (we guess…).

NBC grabbed some video of Ochocinco showing up for work in it:

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has won a record-setting fourth NFL Most Valuable Player award.

NBC Sports is reporting that Manning finished first in MVP voting by the 50-member Associated Press panel that chooses the award. He received 39½ votes, with second placed Drew Brees receiving 7½.

Manning also won in 2003 (sharing the award with Steve McNair), 2004 and 2008, breaking a tie with Brett Favre at three MVPs. Five players (Jim Brown, Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Kurt Warner and Steve Young) have won it twice.

Manning, the 2007 Super Bowl MVP when he won his only league championship, had a career-high 68.8 percent completion rate this season, with 4,500 passing yards and 33 touchdowns.

Indianapolis politician thinks Colts fans deserve a refund

Posted on December 29, 2009. Filed under: Sports | Tags: , , , , , , , |

A former city councilman in Indianapolis wants the ticket holders to receive a refund for Sunday’s lackluster and disappointing performance. Coach Jim Caldwell gave up on a chance at a perfect season and removed Peyton Manning and other key players in the third quarter of the Colts’ loss to the Jets.

Beurt SerVaas, one of the most influential people in the city, has drafted a City-County Council resolution demanding that the NFL refund the money paid for tickets.

SerVaas was incensed that the Colts decided not to go for the win on Sunday and he doesn’t think it’s fair to charge full price for tickets to a game the Colts aren’t trying to win. However, is looks as if he doesn’t have much support for his idea.

“Everyone likes to play Monday-morning quarterback,” said Republican Ryan Vaughn, who is described by the Indianapolis Star as both the likely next council president and a season-ticket holder. “I think we have better things to do with our time than second-guess the decisions made by the Colts coaches.”

Even if the council did pass such a resolution, the odds of the NFL issuing a refund are precisely zero. Nice try, though.

Despite 1700 shovelers having been called in to clear Lincoln Financial Field before the Philadelphia Eagles v San Francisco 49ers game last weekend, there was still plenty of the white stuff left inside the stadium for the 70.000 fans to make use of – and there’s only one correct way to use snow in this kind of setting: Snowball Fight!
