For the first time since 1966: No World Cup Song for England
For the first time since 1966 there will be no official song to mark England’s World Cup campaign, the FA has confirmed. According to an FA spokesman, the England management “want to be fully focused on the football” during their campaign in South Africa, although several unofficial anthems have been rumoured, including a reworking of 1990’s World in Motion by New Order.
So, as we can’t listen to a new song yet (no doubt web 2.0 will come up with something), here are some of the World Cup anthems from years gone by:
2006: Embrace – World At Your Feet
2002: Ant and Dec – We’re On The Ball
1998: England United – (How Does It Feel) To Be On Top Of The World
Also 1998 (although originally written for the European championships in 1996) Baddiel and Skinner/The Lightning Seeds – Three Lions 98 (1998)
1990: New Order – World In Motion
1982: England World Cup Squad – This time (we’ll get it right)
