The champions of U.S. Major League Baseball and Japanese professional baseball could play each other in a regular Global World Series under a plan currently being discussed by the two countries.

Ryozo Kato, commissioner of Nippon Professional Baseball, was quoted as saying his MLB counterpart Bud Selig had agreed the winners of the two countries’ professional leagues should play each other.

Kato, a former Japanese ambassador to the United States, had a meeting with Selig in Milwaukee. Kato told the newspaper Selig had said he wanted to hold such a game before his term is due to end in 2012.
