Making an Effort?

Posted on June 25, 2009. Filed under: Industry News |

The BBC yesterday reported that outgoing Liverpool Football Club chief executive Rick Parry has been appointed to chair an expert panel on sports betting integrity. That in itself is good news, especially as the panel will comprise representatives from all the relevant fields, such as police, the betting industry, and of course the sports industry itself. Top level sports these days involves large amounts of money on all levels – and wherever there is money, there is temptation. So good to know that an increased effort is being made to keep a close eye on it.

Shortly after the BBC article was published, however, the Guardian reported that low staffing levels call the tennis authorities’ commitment to tackling match fixing into question. So while on the one hand increased efforts are being made to keep any sport as clean and honest as it can be these days, there is still room for improvement within at least one of the sports itself.

Surely the only way to instill confidence in fans & punters alike is for everyone involved to pull in the same direction, and to show real commitment and credible efforts whenever words like “corruption” or “match fixing” appear in the news again – or better: before they appear in the news again. As they say: it takes years to build up a reputation, and seconds to destroy it…
